This blog is where I talk about the inner and outer journey of traveling through the world as a black woman and so much more. The topics of travel, race and the inner journey are the short of it. More information (the longer version) is below.
“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.”
– Mark Twain
In 2010 I embarked on the Poetic Justice World Tour, an 8- month quest to volunteer, write poetry and backpack to 17 countries around the world and see the beauty and brokenness of the world. It expanded my soul in ways I am still unraveling. Snippets of that journey will appear on these pages.
Since I’ve already set foot on 6 continents, my new goal is to visit all 50 US states (I’m up to 35) and at least 50 countries (I’m up to 25). Roll with me as I move through new cities, states and countries. Get photos, insights and travel advice or just live vicariously through my ongoing adventure. You just need to come with open minds and open hearts.
“The problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color line.” — W.E.B. Du Bois, The Souls of Black Folk
I’m Black (Surprise, Surprise!), I’ll talk about traveling through the world in black skin… how it impacts my journey, my travel experiences, my politics and my spirituality (just to name a few). Expect commentary on conversations I have, books I read, movies I watch, troubles (and joys) I see and my musings on seeking racial justice and conciliation.
The Inner Journey
“Your life is a sacred journey. And it is about change, growth, movement, transformation, continuously expanding your vision of what is possible, stretching your soul, learning to see clearly and deeply, listening to your intuition, taking courageous risks, and embracing challenges at every step along the way…You are on the path, exactly where you are meant to be right now… And from here, you can only go forward, shaping your life story into a magnificent tale of triumph, of healing, of courage, beauty, wisdom, power, dignity and love…”
